Resort Perspective – UFO Parasailing

IMG_5741-1During the cold months of winter, we decided to check-in on one of our clients located in a much warmer climate.  Briana Thomas is the general manager of UFO Parasailing which has two operations in the Hawaiian Islands. In addition to being regulated by state and local agencies, the US Coast Guard visits UFO monthly to review safety and risk management procedures.   One of the aspects UFO utilizes the most from the 1RISK’s Checklist & Inspection system is the Rules & Notifications.  They have configured Events, Reminders and Notifications which has allowed the staff to better manage multiple operations, and keep the management team informed of what is happening on a daily basis.

UFO is in its second full year of using the mobile based Checklist & Inspection system. Before moving to 1RISK, the operation was doing all of its checks and inspections  with paper logs that were scanned and filed digitally.

IMG_5721-11RISK: What was the big selling point that made you decide to move to the 1RISK system?

UFO: Our decision to implement the 1RISK system was influenced by the digital storage/reporting, the ease of use on a mobile smart phone, the ability for alerts to be sent to admin and other key people, as well as the ease of adding or removing users.

1RISK: When you first started, how long did it take to configure your Checklists?

UFO: We have fairly in depth checklists, with dozens of alerts to administration, so it took a bit for us to fully understand the system and how it would best suit our needs. But now that we are familiar with it, configuring new checklists takes less time. We use the 1RISK system for the maintenance logs for all our vessels, trucks, trailers and shop inspections.

1RISK: After your first season, did you go back and reconfigure anything?  For example, did you learn that some Events could be YES/NO or change an Alert.

UFO: We have done some slight modifying along the way, but mostly we kept the initial configuration as is.

IMG_5717-11RISK: How has the Checklist system changed or improved your operation over the last 2 years?

UFO: The 1RISK system has helped keep our administrative team, chief engineer, and captains in better communication about problems that need to be addressed. It has helped unify our operations, located both on Maui and on the Big Island.

1RISK: What levels of staff use the checklist system? Front line through top management?  How have you implemented Checklist into your staff training?

UFO: Our captains are the main users for completing checklists on our vessels, but our administrative team does shop/office inspections and reviews the reports.

1RISK: What do you think the most important feature in your Checklist system is? And why?

UFO: One of the most important features is the ability for our administrative team to receive alerts via text or email when a question has been failed, so they are immediately notified there is an issue that needs attention.
